User talk:MyRedDice

Please add talk to the bottom. Old talk will be summarised/deleted/moved as I feel up to it - I'll try to be fair in doing this - if I'm not, be bold in fixing dodgy summaries!

Comments made by banned users will typically be moved to the user's talk page and left unanswered. Or some variation on that. In fact, I might do that to any comment, if I feel it is more appropriately placed elsewhere.

Unsigned stuff is probably written by me.

  • On the French Wikipedia, we look at the "Académie Française" and the "encyclopédie Larousse". On the English Wikipedia, we look at google. In the end, what makes a word or a notion "accepted" on the en, is not its real use but it being known by google. It would be interesting one day to list differences existing between each wiki. When I wrote QoI (oct or november I think), I remember distinctly there were only 3 references in google in french, and say around 20 worldwide for "QoI fungicides". 6 months later, there are about 200. Quite understandable: last fall had the first numerous observations of resistance. --Anthere

New talk

It's not fair, I already had a list of maybe ten more very small census areas together with the suggestion to make it a stupid new list, and then I got the editing conflict. Seems like I am not the only one here having stupid ideas, but not the fastest :-) Well, now those entries made it into List of places with fewer than ten people now. And I found some with population 1. Happy rewording of the rambot texts. andy 22:41 12 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Sorry for snapping at you. I think I'm in a bad mood today... -- Oliver P. 09:55 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)

It was a polite request, you said "please", and you moved the text I edited to the bottom rather than just deleting - you behaved admirably Oliver. If only every Wikipedian behaved as you do when in a bad mood, then this'd be a nicer place... :)

Oh, thank you for the compliment! In that case, I'll resist the urge to complain about you not signing the message I'm currently replying to... ;) -- Oliver P. 11:47 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)

See "Unsigned stuff is probably written by me" at the top of the page... :-P

Otherwise, it is by me. But you cannot confuse Martin prose from mine for sure
Btw Martin, did you check the once Opened and now Protected links ? (anthere)

What links?? :-/

ohhhh. There, I am very sad :-((((((( (anthere)

I'm not psychic, anthere - you'll have to help me out here... :-/

Hum. You mentionned this open campaign definition did not exist in google. Implying it did not exist at all I think. I believe we discussed about what was true reality, what was academic reality and what was google reality I guess. Hence, I put some links at the bottom of the page to show you that what was not referenced by google could very well exist nevertheless. Things are not on google either because no one has written anything on the net on the topic yet, or because no one aware of a certain reality has access to the net, or because it is on the net, but spiders are driven away I think or password restrict access. Propaganda stuff, right ? (anthere)

I've just read it... yep, that's exactly the reference I wanted :) I agree, incidentally - google is not reality... but if an article doesn't include any references, it's the best tool we've got, I think.

Conversations between Martin and Anthere are my worst nightmare. ;) -- Oliver P. 14:15 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)

But... Martin is MyRedDice. :-) Evercat 19:40 15 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Would that it were that simple...

That was an interesting piece you wrote about eventualism v. immediatism on the sandbox page, buy why didn't you post it on the meta? I agree with what you've written there, but you left out a third position. Let's call it constructivism. With a constructivist attitude, instead of merely blanking or ignoring a page, one fixes it. That's what I usually do, unless it is one of those "hdfyhxhnjrhgk" type pages that come up so often. LittleDan 00:49 16 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Yes. Preferably. At least Erik did not put on my talk page the little text as he did for Quercus about my "new" powers :-). He just limited himself to wish me fun.
I don't feel good. I think I am gonna expiate by going to the fr wiki and delete 20 pages for relief. Without any listing on vfd. Abusively if possible :-) Humf.
Or perhaps I could go to meta and list 20 pages on the vfd list ?
Na. I'll pick up a beer or two.

regarding:

Are you releasing copyright of these images you are uploading to Wikipedia? If so, then why do you need to say they're copyright by you? If not, they can't be here. -- Zoe

yep, yep - it'd be good if you could add something like "released under the GFDL" to the image description page, just to clarify... Martin

hallo zoe, hallo Martin! regarding:

Are you releasing copyright of these images you are uploading to Wikipedia? If so, then why do you need to say they're copyright by you? If not, they can't be here. -- Zoe

yep, yep - it'd be good if you could add something like "released under the GFDL" to the image description page, just to clarify... Martin yes, of course are we giving you the rjight to use our images, this is legaly done by clicking the "upload" bottom. Heep up with your fine work! we will help you - we are not the Vandals you think we are - Vikings 23:03 16 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Our current image use policy is to cite the source and copyright status of images, amongst other things, on the image description page. We do this for a variety of reasons. Firstly it is good practice to cite one's sources - whether they be public domain, released under the GFDL by a third party, or taken by a Wikipedian. Secondly, a greater proportion of images submitted to Wikipedia are under some kind of copyright, compared to text, so this naturally calls for a little extra care.

If you think our policy is silly, then by all means discuss it with us, but I would ask you to follow our suggestions. They're not very onerous, and we feel they're worth the effort. Martin 23:17 16 Jun 2003 (UTC)

I've given an idea of what I'm after at :Image:Vikings21.jpg. If you could fill in the gaps there and do something similar for your other images, it'd be much appreciated. Martin 23:56 16 Jun 2003 (UTC)

    • we have done that, thank you very much for your suggestions.

Heh. I love the timeline on User talk:Zoe. It reads like a detective's report on some horrific airplane crash, or something. :-) Also, thanks for the kind words... Evercat 01:38 17 Jun 2003 (UTC)

As Joe Canuck has again chosen to delete what you restored, I am putting the answers to your questions here. Sorry for taking up your page with this.

Your comment has two parts, so I shall answer them seperately.
  1. Is Joe Canuck a reincarnation of DW/Black Widow/...? Perhaps. We have a rough policy on how to deal with possible reincarnations at wikipedia:bans and blocks. If that rough policy is inaccurate or inappropriate, edit it. Otherwise, apply it.
  2. Are Joe Canuck's images inappropriate on Wikipedia? Perhaps. I suggest that you list them on votes for deletion. While both you and I would prefer that Joe provide sources, Joe has made it clear that he has no intention of doing so. Since we cannot force Joe to provide sources, we are left with two options: keep the images, or delete the images.
Martin 23:00 17 Jun 2003 (UTC)

If necessary I will do so, but that is a last resort. All I am trying to do is to let Joe know the rules in the hope that he will understand what the problem is and supply the necessary information. It would be a pity if images that wiki can hold onto was deleted because Joe refused to supply the information. But if Joe Canuck refuses to supply any information, his images will have to be put on the VfD. As to whether he is DW, that has been discussed by a number of people. If people reach a consensus on that, appropriate action will follow. FearÉIREANN 23:32 17 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Given his constant censoring of questions and removing of information, I guess there is no alternative but to place his images on the VfD page. FearÉIREANN 23:32 17 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Martin, do you realize that you have been inconsitent in your usage of periods on the Wikipedia:Naming conventions (years in titles) page (U.S. & US)? Well, I suppose you may not be the source of the inconsistency, but you WERE the last to edit that page. ;) --Dante Alighieri 10:02 18 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Looks good. You might consider, eg, saying what you link to (eg lk [[this article rather than link). One benefit of this is it clues people in to existing articles that they might not have read yet, thus promoting wikipedia-addiction! :) Martin

Sorry. My mistake. I was about to undelete it. If you haven't done so already I will do it. FearÉIREANN 20:24 27 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Are you from a "judéo chrétienne" education ? Probably I think. We got raised in the feeling we have to suffer. And should an ennemy hit us, we should smile and give the other cheek. And that any suffering we are submitted to is our fault, and for this reason should not be fought. That is the behavior of an abused kid, not only not daring denouncing the crime, but also feeling responsible for what is happening to his body, hurting his soul himself, and sometimes even feeling love for his persecutor. Well...I am fighting against my culture then.Elk

I am from a Judeo-Christian background, but my response to suffering is more Buddhist in style. I would not wish to impose my strategy on anyone else, however - we must all choose our own path. Martin 10:05 30 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Martin, just dropping you a note that you have been nominated for a more "formal" sysophood (re: your WikiEN-l post) by Anthere on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. It's already been seconded twice. --Dante Alighieri 07:36 1 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I thought your comment on 2003 in sports was quite funny really. I'm not too concerned with finding out the answer. Lisiate 23:13 1 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Hrmm, is there really a policy of reverting everything if it's discovered that a user is an alias for a hard-banned user? I think such a policy is unworkable - what if some major contributor turns out to be Lir, for example? :-) Evercat 23:16 1 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I'm not ignoring you Evercat, but I'll reply later, if I may. Martin 23:25 1 Jul 2003 (UTC)

You may. :-) Point me to the discussion of this, if there's been one... Evercat 23:26 1 Jul 2003 (UTC)

ohhhhh, that is a GREAT idea. I dared not remove them. No personal attack. Yes sure. I know of some discussions which will drastically be cleaned up as soon as the issue is solved. :-) Just the mailing lists are left, will stay forever :-(

Pump archives

Thanks for going through the Village Pump archives and putting comments in context. That's the kind of refactoring I can appreciate. --Eloquence 19:47 2 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Hi. You pointed quadrillion at "English number names", on the basis that it was a dictionary entry. I agree, as a dictionary entry, it's not appropriate. However, I can think of a better way to go... Just like we have articles such as 1 E6 m, we should also be able to have articles on dimensionaless orders of magnitude such as 1 E6[?]. These can deal with entries such as "grains of sand on a beach", "stars in our galaxy", "atoms in the Earth", ";Avogadro's number", "cells in the human body", "base pairs in the human genome" etc. etc. -- The Anome

That's a nice idea :) Then Quadrillion would become a disambig page. I need to get back to work, though... :-/

I've added appropriate links to SI prefix for a start. -- The Anome

I could not remember the proper code...now...strike for deletion, underline for rewriting. I'll see :-)

Martin, I need any reference to what guidelines exist on edit wars and page protection. We have a bad situation on the french wiki, with 4 people involved, 2 being sysops. Can you help me find the right reference ? Please Anthere

wikipedia:protected page is all we have, I think.

thanks. I hope they behave. ant

Hi, Martin. I added link from Jfitzg to Trontonian as you suggested. I imagine some people (no names, no pack drill) still think I'm DW, though. Okay, some person. Jfitzg
Martin, I wonder if most of your text in the article on Vote wouldn't better be merged with voting system or election.

The background to my interest, in case you wonder, is that I was hunting for the proper English terms for the procedure when an assembly has to chose between several different propositions. Think of for instance decision on a regular day-and-time for future meetings, or the choice of a flag. There might be several propositions, and if none of them gains absolute majority immediately, and if relative majority isn't acceptable according to charter, rules of order, or the assembly itself, then a procedure somehow similar to a runoff voting must be followed. I am specifically looking for the term of this procedure.

BTW, I think I've noticed that all related articles are geared towards elections and no other kinds of votings.

regards!
-- Ruhrjung 16:38 6 Jul 2003 (UTC)

hmm, could be. Go for it.

:-)))
I'd hoped you would say something like "Hmmm, I will consider it" instead.
