Administration

In 202, under the reign of Emperor Gaodi[?] of Han Dynasty (漢高帝), Yuzhang Commandry (豫章郡 yu4 zhang1 jun4) was created. It was named after Yuzhang River (豫章江), the original name of Gan River[?] (贛江). "Gan" has became the abbreviation of the province. It governed eighteen districts (縣):

  • Nanchang (南昌 nan2 chang1): now a city
  • Luling (廬陵 lu4 ling2)
  • Pengze (彭澤 peng2 ze2)
  • Poyang (鄱陽 po2 yang2): named after a large lake
  • Yuhan (餘汗 yu2 han4)
  • Chaicang (柴桑 chai2 cang1)
  • Gan (贛): now a county under Ganzhou City (赣州市)
  • Xin'gan (新淦 xin1 gan4)
  • Nancheng (南城)
  • Yichun (宜春): now a city
  • Yudu (雩都 yu2 du1)
  • Ai (艾 ai4)
  • Anping (安平)
  • Haiwen (海昏)
  • Liling (曆陵)
  • Jiancheng (建成)

Under the reign of Emperor Wudi of Han Dynasty (漢武帝), Yuzhang Commandry assigned to Yang Zhoubu (楊州部 yang2 zhou1 bu4).

In the first year of the Yuan'gang period (元康元年) of Western Jin Dynasty (291), it became Jiang Prefecture (江州), named after Xiang River.

In Sui Dynasty, there contained 7 commandries (郡) and 24 districts in Jiangxi. In Tang Dynasty, one additional commandry and 14 additional districts were added to Jiangxi.

Jiangnan West Circuit was named in 733, under the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty (唐玄宗).

As a circuit, it has eight prefectures under it:

  • Hong (洪 hong2)
  • Rao (饒 rao2)
  • Qian (虔 qian2)
  • Ji (吉 ji2)
  • Jiang (江 jiang1)
  • Yuan (袁 yuan2)
  • Fu (撫 fu3)
  • Xin (信 xin4)

Six prefectures and four army districts (軍 jun) replaced the previous prefectures (with 55 districts (縣)) during the period of Five Dynasties, when Jiangxi first belonged to Wu (吳) Kingdom, then Southern Tang (唐) Kingdom.

In the Song Dynasty, Jiangnan West Circuit became two subcircuits (路 lu) -- Jiangnan West Lu (larger) and East Lu -- with nine prefectures and four army districts (with 68 districts).

In the Yuan Dynasty, the two subcircuits are separated into thirteen subcircuits and combined into Jiangxi Xing-Province (行省), which also included the majority of the modern Guangdong. And it formally became a province in the Qing Dynasty.

Near the small city of Yingtan (鹰潭) is the resort area Longhushan[?] (龙虎山) which purports to be the birthplace of Taoism (道教) and hence has great symbolic value to Taoists. The region has many interesting temples, cave complexes, mountains and villages. It is considered by many to be the best-kept secret of Jiangxi tourism.
