Hancock County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 51,791. Its county seat is Ellsworth6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,089 km² (2,351 mi²). 4,112 km² (1,588 mi²) of it is land and 1,977 km² (763 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 32.47% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 51,791 people, 21,864 households, and 14,233 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (33/mi²). There are 33,945 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.61% White, 0.25% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 21,864 households out of which 28.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.50% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.90% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,811, and the median income for a family is $43,216. Males have a median income of $30,461 versus $22,647 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,809. 10.20% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.90% are under the age of 18 and 9.50% are 65 or older.
