The town is the home of the Pierre Monteux School for orchestral conductors and musicians. It was founded by the conductor Pierre Monteux in 1943.
Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 100.1 km² (38.7 mi²). 77.2 km² (29.8 mi²) of it is land and 22.9 km² (8.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 22.85% water.
Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,147 people, 927 households, and 596 families residing in the town. The population density is 27.8/km² (72.0/mi²). There are 1,200 housing units at an average density of 15.5/km² (40.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.39% White, 0.33% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 927 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 27.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.77.
In the town the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $32,778, and the median income for a family is $36,855. Males have a median income of $27,448 versus $21,031 for females.
