Far From Kansas is a Washington, D.C. based
improv comedy[?] performance troupe. Founded in 2002 by comedian
Don Gibbs, it is the first gay community oriented troupe of its kind in the city. They spent their first months rehearsing in the offices of The Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League, or
SMYAL. Their performances use traditional improv "games" to present wacky characters and zany situations, all with a gay sensibility. The troupe members (with a few of their popular characters) are:
- Easter Bradford (Tawnie Jackson, cheerleader; Ivanka Brussinski, Russian Supermodel)
- Christopher Cochran (Midge Davis, cleanliness specialist)
- Don Gibbs (Skip Peterson, child star; Shaquisha Jackson)
- Charlotte Hendrix (Lesbian Quasimodo; Ethel Goldbloom, tourist)
- Don Mullins (Boneless Woman!)
(from left to right: Bradford, Mullins, Gibbs, Cochran; Hendrix in front)
The group disbanded in March of 2003 when Bradford left the group to pursue other interests. Because he was the sole source of bookings for the group, the other were left to their own devices and eventually it collapsed completely.
Former members include:
- Cassi Holder
- Calvin Nokes
- Scott Simpson
