SMYAL

SMYAL is the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. SMYAL provides services to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning youth and their families. Located in the Eastern Market[?] area of D.C., SMYAL has a recreational center that provides drop-in hours for youth to visit and socialize with other youth. It also provides access to HIV and AIDS education and testing, condoms, and mental health counselors.

In the year 2000 SMYAL came into some controversy when a violent fight broke out amongst visiting teens. The organization almost folded, but it was put under new management and revamped; it has since had no incidents of this nature.
