Chambers County, Alabama

Chambers County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Henry C. Chambers, who served as a Senator from Alabama. As of 2000 the population was 36,583. Its county seat is Lafayette[?].

History Chambers County was established on December 18, 1832.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,562 km² (603 mi²). 1,547 km² (597 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.98% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 36,583 people, 14,522 households, and 10,194 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (61/mi²). There are 16,256 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 60.88% White, 38.11% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,522 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.50% are married couples living together, 17.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,667, and the median income for a family is $36,598. Males have a median income of $28,771 versus $21,159 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,147. 17.00% of the population and 14.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.50% are under the age of 18 and 18.20% are 65 or older.
