Lee County, Alabama

Lee County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Robert E. Lee, commanding general of the Confederate Army. As of 2000 the population was 115,092. Its county seat is Opelika.

History Lee County was established on December 5, 1866.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,594 km² (616 mi²). 1,577 km² (609 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.11% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 115,092 people, 45,702 households, and 27,284 families residing in the county. The population density is 73/km² (189/mi²). There are 50,329 housing units at an average density of 32/km² (83/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.07% White, 22.65% African American, 0.24% Native American, 1.63% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 45,702 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.10% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.30% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 22.70% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 17.80% from 45 to 64, and 8.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,952, and the median income for a family is $46,781. Males have a median income of $33,598 versus $23,228 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,158. 21.80% of the population and 11.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.30% are under the age of 18 and 12.00% are 65 or older.
