Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,198 people, 3,832 households, and 2,605 families residing in the city. The population density is 364.6/km² (944.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 70.17% White, 28.78% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,832 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 15.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 29.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.95.
