Yeadon, Pennsylvania

Yeadon is a borough located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 11,762.

Geography Yeadon is located at 39°55'58" North, 75°15'6" West (39.932862, -75.251540)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,762 people, 4,696 households, and 2,967 families residing in the borough. The population density is 2,820.7/km² (7,297.1/mi²). There are 4,958 housing units at an average density of 1,189.0/km² (3,075.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 15.56% White, 80.77% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 2.15% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,696 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.6% are married couples living together, 20.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the borough the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 79.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.1 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $45,450, and the median income for a family is $55,169. Males have a median income of $35,830 versus $32,118 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $22,546. 4.6% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.1% are under the age of 18 and 6.7% are 65 or older.

History and Facts The Borough of Yeadon took its name from Yeadon Manor, the estate of William Bullock, when it incorporated from Darby, Pennsylvania in 1893. Bullock, for whom a street is named at the location where his estate once stood, took the name originally from his home city of Yeadon (http://www.yeadononline.org.uk/) in West Yorkshire, England.
