Delaware County, Pennsylvania

Delaware County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 550,864. Its county seat is Media6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 494 km² (191 mi²). 477 km² (184 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.42% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 550,864 people, 206,320 households, and 139,472 families residing in the county. The population density is 1,155/km² (2,990/mi²). There are 216,978 housing units at an average density of 455/km² (1,178/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.32% White, 14.52% African American, 0.11% Native American, 3.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 206,320 households out of which 31.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.80% are married couples living together, 12.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.40% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 91.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.90 males.
