Newtown Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania

Newtown Township is a township located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 11,700.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 26.2 km² (10.1 mi²). 26.0 km² (10.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.69% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,700 people, 4,549 households, and 3,184 families residing in the township. The population density is 450.4/km² (1,166.0/mi²). There are 4,690 housing units at an average density of 180.5/km² (467.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 96.16% White, 0.66% African American, 0.07% Native American, 2.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,549 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.4% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 27.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the township the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $65,924, and the median income for a family is $82,557. Males have a median income of $61,688 versus $37,319 for females. The per capita income for the township is $39,364. 3.5% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.6% are under the age of 18 and 3.9% are 65 or older.
