USS Newark

Only one commissioned ship of the United States Navy has borne the name Newark, after the town of Newark, New Jersey; the protected cruiser Newark (Cruiser No. 1).

In 1942, CL-100 was to be a light cruiser named Newark, but it was converted to a light aircraft carrier[?] and eventually launched as the San Jacinto (CVL-30)[?].

Another light cruiser Newark (CL-108) was cancelled in August 1945 before completion, although the hull was later launched and used for tests.
