Tallapoosa County, Alabama

Tallapoosa County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is from an unknown American Indian source. As of 2000 the population was 41,475. Its county seat is Dadeville.

History Tallapoosa County was established on December 18, 1832.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,985 km² (766 mi²). 1,859 km² (718 mi²) of it is land and 125 km² (48 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.30% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 41,475 people, 16,656 households, and 11,809 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (58/mi²). There are 20,510 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.48% White, 25.36% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,656 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 14.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 16.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,745, and the median income for a family is $38,148. Males have a median income of $28,557 versus $19,885 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,909. 16.60% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.30% are under the age of 18 and 15.60% are 65 or older.
