History Elmore County was established on February 15, 1866.
Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,702 km² (657 mi²). 1,609 km² (621 mi²) of it is land and 93 km² (36 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.47% water.
Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 65,874 people, 22,737 households, and 17,552 families residing in the county. The population density is 41/km² (106/mi²). There are 25,733 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (41/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.02% White, 20.64% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 22,737 households out of which 37.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.80% are non-families. 20.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 32.10% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 10.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 102.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $41,243, and the median income for a family is $47,155. Males have a median income of $32,643 versus $24,062 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,650. 10.20% of the population and 7.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.20% are under the age of 18 and 11.30% are 65 or older.
