Okanogan County, Washington

Okanogan County is a county located in the State of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 39,564. The county seat is at Okanogan.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 13,766 km² (5,315 mi²). 13,644 km² (5,268 mi²) of it is land and 122 km² (47 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.89% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 39,564 people, 15,027 households, and 10,579 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 19,085 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.32% White, 0.28% African American, 11.47% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 9.58% from other races, and 2.84% from two or more races. 14.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,027 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,726, and the median income for a family is $35,012. Males have a median income of $29,495 versus $22,005 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,900. 21.30% of the population and 16.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.20% are under the age of 18 and 10.40% are 65 or older.
