Skagit County, Washington

Skagit County is a county located in the State of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 102,979. The county seat is at Mount Vernon.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,974 km² (1,920 mi²). 4,494 km² (1,735 mi²) of it is land and 480 km² (185 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.65% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 102,979 people, 38,852 households, and 27,351 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (59/mi²). There are 42,681 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.49% White, 0.44% African American, 1.85% Native American, 1.49% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 7.17% from other races, and 2.40% from two or more races. 11.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 38,852 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,381, and the median income for a family is $48,347. Males have a median income of $37,207 versus $26,123 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,256. 11.10% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.50% are under the age of 18 and 6.80% are 65 or older.
