After several stints with various bands, he became the vocalist for Winter Rose[?]. He was approached about a side project with Aquarius Records[?], and learned about Dream Theater's search for a new vocalist. He was chosen as the new vocalist for Dream Theater in 1991 (beating out over 200 other applicants) and began using his middle name, James. His musical inspiration comes from many different genres, including such musicians as Metallica, Beethoven, Nat King Cole, Queen, and Sting.
In 1999, James completed the first MullMuzzler[?] CD, Keep it to Yourself[?]. MullMuzzler 2[?] was released on September 11, 2001.
