Aroostook County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 73,938. Its county seat is Houlton[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 17,686 km² (6,829 mi²). 17,279 km² (6,672 mi²) of it is land and 407 km² (157 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.30% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 73,938 people, 30,356 households, and 20,429 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (11/mi²). There are 38,719 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.80% White, 0.38% African American, 1.36% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 30,356 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.70% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.60% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 26.20% from 45 to 64, and 17.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,837, and the median income for a family is $36,044. Males have a median income of $29,747 versus $20,300 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,033. 14.30% of the population and 9.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.20% are under the age of 18 and 16.00% are 65 or older.
