Volgograd

Volgograd (pop. 1,100,000) is a city on the west bank of Volga river in Russia's Volgograd oblast[?].

Founded as a fortress by the name of Tsaritsyn in 1589 to defend the southern border of the Russian Empire. Known as Stalingrad in the years 1925 - 1961, Volgograd is the site of the Battle of Stalingrad, which raged through the city from the summer of 1942 to February 2, 1943.
