Tlaxcala

Tlaxcala is a state in México located to the east of Mexico City. Tlaxcala is bordered to the north by the state of Hidalgo, to the west by the state of México, and to the south Puebla. The state consists of 60 municipalites. It has an area or 4,037 km2, geographically the smallest of the Mexican states. Tlaxcala had a population of 962,646 according to the 2000 census, of which 51.2% were female and 48.8% male. The main exports of the state are textiles, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. ISO 3166-2 is MX-TLA.

The state governor is Alfonso Abraham Sanchez Anaya, serving from 1998 to 2003.

The capital of Tlaxcala State is the City of Tlaxcala, with a population of 73,184 in the 2000 census. The city was founded in 1520 by Hernan Cortes. It is located at 19.31°N, 98.24°W.

Also in the state of Tlaxcala are the cities of Apizaco, Calpulapan, Chiautempan, Huamantla, and the Pre-Columbian ruin of Cacaxtla[?].

Tlaxcala was a nation in Pre-Columbian times which was never conquered by the Aztec, and aided Hernan Cortes in his conquest of Mexico in the early 16th century. The name "Tlaxcala" means "Place of Maize Corn Bread".
