Tabasco (sometimes historically spelled Tobasco) is a state in Mexico, in the north of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. It has an area of 24,578 km square. Tabasco is bordered by the Mexican states of Veracruz to the west, Chiapas to the south, and Campeche to the north east. To the west Tabasco borders with the Peten Department of Guatemala, to the north is the Gulf of Mexico. ISO 3166-2 is MX-TAB.

In 2000 the state had 1,748,769 inhabitants.

The capital city of Tabasco is Villahermosa. Also in the state of Tabasco are the cities of Ciudad Pemex, Emiliano Zapata, and Tenosique, the Olmec ruins of La Venta[?] and San Miguel and the Maya ruins of Comalcalco[?] and Tortuguero.
