St. Clair County, Alabama

St. Clair County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of General Arthur St. Clair, of Pennsylvania. As of 2000 the population was 64,742. Its county seat is Ashville.

History St. Clair County was established on November 20, 1818.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,693 km² (654 mi²). 1,641 km² (634 mi²) of it is land and 51 km² (20 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.04% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 64,742 people, 24,143 households, and 18,445 families residing in the county. The population density is 39/km² (102/mi²). There are 27,303 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (43/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.03% White, 8.13% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 24,143 households out of which 35.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.80% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.60% are non-families. 20.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 101.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,285, and the median income for a family is $43,152. Males have a median income of $33,914 versus $24,433 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,960. 12.10% of the population and 9.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.20% are under the age of 18 and 12.60% are 65 or older.
