Pell City is a city located in St. Clair County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 9,565.

Geography Pell City is located at 33°34'15" North, 86°16'26" West (33.570907, -86.273845)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 70.4 km² (27.2 mi²). 63.6 km² (24.6 mi²) of it is land and 6.7 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.57% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,565 people, 3,830 households, and 2,772 families residing in the city. The population density is 150.3/km² (389.3/mi²). There are 4,275 housing units at an average density of 67.2/km² (174.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.41% White, 15.38% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 1.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,830 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,250, and the median income for a family is $48,207. Males have a median income of $38,393 versus $25,906 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,935. 11.2% of the population and 7.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.2% are under the age of 18 and 9.8% are 65 or older.
