Southampton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania

Southampton Township is a township located in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 655.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 76.0 km² (29.4 mi²). 76.0 km² (29.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 655 people, 239 households, and 186 families residing in the township. The population density is 8.6/km² (22.3/mi²). There are 274 housing units at an average density of 3.6/km² (9.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.86% White, 0.92% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 0.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 239 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.3% are married couples living together, 4.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.8% are non-families. 18.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the township the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 106.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $29,167, and the median income for a family is $31,719. Males have a median income of $26,750 versus $21,354 for females. The per capita income for the township is $14,149. 11.7% of the population and 10.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.5% are under the age of 18 and 6.2% are 65 or older.
