Somerset County, Pennsylvania

Somerset County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 80,023. Its county seat is Somerset6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,800 km² (1,081 mi²). 2,783 km² (1,075 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.60% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 80,023 people, 31,222 households, and 22,042 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (74/mi²). There are 37,163 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.39% White, 1.59% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 31,222 households out of which 29.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.40% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.90 males.
