Manley Lanier "Sonny" Carter, Jr. (1947 - 1991) was an astronaut, qualified for assignment as a mission specialist for the 1989 flight of Space Shuttle Discovery. He died April 5, 1991, near Georgia, in a commercial airplane crash. After his death, his name was given to the underwater astronaut training facility, to development of which he contributed substantially.
