In 1976, Fields was able to show that she could act in drama, when she starred as the woman with multiple personalities in Sybil. She won an Emmy Award for the role. In 1979, she starred in Norma Rae, and won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She repeated the win in 1984 with Places in the Heart, at which time she made her gushing acceptance speech including the much-parodied line, "You like me, you really like me."
Other films inclue Smokey and the Bandit[?], Murphy's Romance, Steel Magnolias[?], Mrs. Doubtfire[?] and Forrest Gump.
