Saginaw County, Michigan

Saginaw County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 210,039. Its county seat is Saginaw6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,113 km² (816 mi²). 2,095 km² (809 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.84% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 210,039 people, 80,430 households, and 55,818 families residing in the county. The population density is 100/km² (260/mi²). There are 85,505 housing units at an average density of 41/km² (106/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.33% White, 18.62% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.88% from other races, and 1.95% from two or more races. 6.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 80,430 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.20% are married couples living together, 15.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,637, and the median income for a family is $46,494. Males have a median income of $40,514 versus $25,419 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,438. 13.90% of the population and 11.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.70% are under the age of 18 and 9.50% are 65 or older.
