Geography The parish has a total area of 2,620 km2 (1,012 mi2). 2,241 km2 (865 mi2) of it is land and 379 km2 (146 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 14.46% water.
Demographics As of 2000, there are 23,459 people, 9,221 households, and 6,593 families residing in the parish. The population density is 10/km2 (27/mi2). There are 13,671 housing units at an average density of 6 persons/km2 (16 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 72.67% White, 16.87% African American, 7.79% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 2.18% from two or more races. 2.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,221 households out of which 31.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 28.50% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the parish the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.60 males.
The median income for a household in the parish is $26,655, and the median income for a family is $32,470. Males have a median income of $29,726 versus $18,514 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $15,199. 21.50% of the population and 16.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.00% are under the age of 18 and 17.50% are 65 or older.
