Zwolle, Louisiana

Zwolle is a town located in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,783.

Geography Zwolle is located at 31°38'6" North, 93°38'33" West (31.635134, -93.642560)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²). 8.4 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.99% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,783 people, 630 households, and 437 families residing in the town. The population density is 213.1/km² (552.6/mi²). There are 725 housing units at an average density of 86.7/km² (224.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 33.37% White, 47.17% African American, 16.38% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.07% from other races, and 2.02% from two or more races. 6.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 630 households out of which 39.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.8% are married couples living together, 27.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.36.

In the town the population is spread out with 35.5% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 82.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $15,843, and the median income for a family is $17,326. Males have a median income of $25,625 versus $14,922 for females. The per capita income for the town is $9,042. 40.5% of the population and 37.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 52.8% are under the age of 18 and 35.9% are 65 or older.
