Converse, Louisiana

Converse is a village located in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 400.

Geography Converse is located at 31°46'49" North, 93°41'55" West (31.780369, -93.698620)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 400 people, 166 households, and 111 families residing in the village. The population density is 72.5/km² (187.7/mi²). There are 202 housing units at an average density of 36.6/km² (94.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 79.50% White, 8.75% African American, 7.75% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 4.00% from two or more races. 6.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 166 households out of which 30.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 30.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the village the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $25,250, and the median income for a family is $31,875. Males have a median income of $31,058 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village is $13,180. 29.3% of the population and 23.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 52.5% are under the age of 18 and 23.1% are 65 or older.
