Pike County, Alabama

Pike County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of General Zebulon Pike, of New Jersey, an explorer who led an expedition to southern Colorado and discovered Pikes Peak in 1806. As of 2000 the population was 29,605. Its county seat is Troy.

History Pike County was established on December 17, 1821.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,741 km² (672 mi²). 1,738 km² (671 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 29,605 people, 11,933 households, and 7,649 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (44/mi²). There are 13,981 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 60.77% White, 36.60% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 1.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,933 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.60% are married couples living together, 16.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.90% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 15.80% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 89.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,551, and the median income for a family is $34,132. Males have a median income of $27,094 versus $18,758 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,904. 23.10% of the population and 18.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.90% are under the age of 18 and 21.90% are 65 or older.
