Oxford County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 54,755. Its county seat is South Paris6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,634 km² (2,175 mi²). 5,382 km² (2,078 mi²) of it is land and 252 km² (97 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.47% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 54,755 people, 22,314 households, and 15,173 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 32,295 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.25% White, 0.17% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,314 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.10% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.00% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,435, and the median income for a family is $39,794. Males have a median income of $30,641 versus $21,233 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,945. 11.80% of the population and 8.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.80% are under the age of 18 and 10.10% are 65 or older.
