Oracle Corporation is one of the major companies developing database management systems and tools for database development. Oracle corp was founded in 1977 and has offices in more than 145 countries around the world.

The CEO for several years has been Lawrence J. Ellison (Larry Ellison). He is also at the moment chairman of the company. He is reported to be the richest man in the world by Forbes[?].

The latest verion of Oracle is 9i, Oracle 9i application server using J2EE is the server part of that version of the database making it possible to deploy web applications. The strong interrelationship between Oracle 9i and Java has enabled the company to now allow developers to create stored procedures[?] written in the Java language, as well as the traditional Oracle database programming language, PL/SQL.

The tools for developing applications are Oracle Designer, Oracle Developer, Oracle JDeveloper, and several more. There are many external tools to make the Oracle DBA's life easier.

Besides Databases, Oracle now also sells applications (and an application server called 9iAS) that run exclusively through a browser and the internet. Their slogan is "You can't break it, You can't break in" to signify the increasing demands on information safety. Reliability of networks is also one of their main selling points. Oracle's world headquarters are located on the San Francisco Peninsula in the Redwood Shores area of Redwood City, adjacent to Belmont.
