Belmont, California

Belmont is a city located in San Mateo County, California. It is a relatively small suburb in the San Francisco Bay Area, located about half-way down the San Francisco Peninsula between San Mateo and San Carlos. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 25,123.

Belmont is mostly made up of residential housing and retail stores. During the 1990s housing demand (and prices) increased dramatically, in large part due to the growth of the nearby headquarters of Oracle Corporation.

Geography Belmont is located at 37°31'5" North, 122°17'30" West (37.518087, -122.291673)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²). 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.22% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,123 people, 10,418 households, and 6,542 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,141.3/km² (5,551.1/mi²). There are 10,577 housing units at an average density of 901.5/km² (2,337.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.19% White, 1.68% African American, 0.29% Native American, 15.44% Asian, 0.54% Pacific Islander, 2.62% from other races, and 4.25% from two or more races. 8.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,418 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% are non-families. 27.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.3% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 35.9% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $80,905, and the median income for a family is $95,722. Males have a median income of $63,281 versus $46,957 for females. The per capita income for the city is $42,812. 4.0% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.2% are under the age of 18 and 4.8% are 65 or older.
