Morgan County, Tennessee

Morgan County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 19,757. Its county seat is Wartburg6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,353 km² (522 mi²). 1,352 km² (522 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 19,757 people, 6,990 households, and 5,235 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 7,714 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.72% White, 2.23% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,990 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.70% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.10% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 31.90% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 114.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 116.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,712, and the median income for a family is $31,901. Males have a median income of $25,683 versus $18,606 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,925. 16.00% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.50% are under the age of 18 and 15.80% are 65 or older.

Tornado

On November 11, 2002, a tornado destroyed 50 homes. At least three people were killed in Mossy Grove.
