Harriman is a city located in Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,744.

Geography Harriman is located at 35°55'43" North, 84°33'21" West (35.928585, -84.555700)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.5 km² (10.2 mi²). 26.0 km² (10.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.86% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,744 people, 2,907 households, and 1,802 families residing in the city. The population density is 259.3/km² (671.5/mi²). There are 3,309 housing units at an average density of 127.3/km² (329.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.11% White, 7.43% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,907 households out of which 24.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% are non-families. 34.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,736, and the median income for a family is $31,190. Males have a median income of $26,616 versus $20,278 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,763. 22.8% of the population and 18.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.1% are under the age of 18 and 18.7% are 65 or older.
