Mason County is a county located in the State of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 49,405. The county seat is at Shelton.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,722 km² (1,051 mi²). 2,489 km² (961 mi²) of it is land and 233 km² (90 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.56% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 49,405 people, 18,912 households, and 13,389 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (51/mi²). There are 25,515 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.46% White, 1.19% African American, 3.72% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.45% Pacific Islander, 2.10% from other races, and 3.03% from two or more races. 4.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,912 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 25.80% from 45 to 64, and 16.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 107.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,586, and the median income for a family is $44,246. Males have a median income of $37,007 versus $25,817 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,056. 12.20% of the population and 8.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.30% are under the age of 18 and 4.90% are 65 or older.
