Hutt City, (pop 95,500) formerly known as
Lower Hutt, is a
New Zealand city in the lower (southern) valley of the
Hutt River, to the northeast of
Wellington city. It is the ninth-largest city in
New Zealand. The Hutt City region is popular for outdoor sports, especially mountain biking, hiking, fishing and swimming.
Having absorbed the former Borough of Petone[?], Hutt City strengthened its image as the Wellington region's industrial centre (not just a dormitory suburbia). The Waiwhetu Stream[?] has the reputation of surpassing all other New Zealand rivers in pollution and toxicity.
Hutt City also encompasses Wainuiomata and the former Boroughs of Eastbourne and Petone[?].
