The county was established in 1850, with various additions and removals of territory over the years. Orange County, to the southeast, was split off from Los Angeles County in 1889.
The coastal portion of the county is heavily urban, though there is a large expanse of sparsely populated desert farther inland.

Geography The county has a total area of 12,308 km² (4,752 mi²). 10,518 km² (4,061 mi²) of it is land and 1,791 km² (691 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.55% water.
Demographics As of 2000, there are 9,519,338 people, 3,133,774 households, and 2,137,233 families residing in the county. The population density is 905/km² (2,344/mi²). There are 3,270,909 housing units at an average density of 311 persons/km² (806 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 48.71% White, 9.78% African American, 0.81% Native American, 11.95% Asian, 0.28% Pacific Islander, 23.53% from other races, and 4.94% from two or more races. 44.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,133,774 households out of which 36.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.60% are married couples living together, 14.70% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 31.80% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.61.
In the county the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 32.60% from 25 to 44, 19.40% from 45 to 64, and 9.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $42,189, and the median income for a family is $46,452. Males have a median income of $36,299 versus $30,981 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,683. 17.90% of the population and 14.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.20% are under the age of 18 and 10.50% are 65 or older.
