List of historic fires
Before the 20th century, fires were a major hazard to urban areas and the cause of massive amounts of damage to cities. Following is a list of major historical fires:
- Great Fire of Rome[?] - 64
- Great Fire of London - 1666
- Great Chicago Fire - 1871
- Peshtigo, Wisconsin[?] - 1871 - the largest forest fire in United States history, overshadowed by the Chicago fire, which occurred on the same day
- San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906
- Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire - 1911
- Reichstag fire - 1933
- Cocoanut Grove fire - this fire in a Boston nightclub in 1942 killed 492 people and led to reform of the fire codes.
- King's Cross fire - 1987
