Lafayette County is a county located in the State of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 16,137. Its county seat is Darlington[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,644 km² (635 mi²). 1,641 km² (634 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 16,137 people, 6,211 households, and 4,378 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 6,674 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.03% White, 0.11% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,211 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.00% are married couples living together, 7.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.50% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.00 males.
