Notes Connecting these routes is easy, I-84 "joins" I-80 in Utah, and then joins I-81 in Pennsylvania.

Orginally the part of I-84 east of Hartford was numbered I-86 and I-84 was going to go to Providence. Only I-384 (and some memories of cryptic roadsigns saying first that I-84 was to become I-86 for no apparent reason, and then they said I-86 is now I-84) remains of this project.

The western Interstate 84 was originally numbered Interstate 80N. It was given its new designation in 1980.
