Hutt City

Hutt City, (pop 95,500) formerly known as Lower Hutt, is a New Zealand city in the lower (southern) valley of the Hutt River, to the northeast of Wellington city. It is the ninth-largest city in New Zealand. The Hutt City region is popular for outdoor sports, especially mountain biking, hiking, fishing and swimming.

Having absorbed the former Borough of Petone[?], Hutt City strengthened its image as the Wellington region's industrial centre (not just a dormitory suburbia). The Waiwhetu Stream[?] has the reputation of surpassing all other New Zealand rivers in pollution and toxicity.

Hutt City also encompasses Wainuiomata and the former Boroughs of Eastbourne and Petone[?].

• Do not confuse with the separate city of Upper Hutt to the north.
• The legal name of the conurbation remains "Lower Hutt" as the name change process is not yet completed, however the city council's name is now "Hutt City Council" (see Lower Hutt City (Name of City Council) Act 1991).
