Heraklion

Heraklion or Iraklion (SAMPA [i'raklion]]) is the major city and capital of the island of Crete. It is also the capital of the prefecture of the same name.

It has an international airport named after the famous writer Nikos Kazantzakis.

The famous ruins of Knossos, which were excavated and sui generis restored by Evans, are nearby.
