The subject for Hello, Dolly! originally comes from the play Einen Jux will er sich machen (1842) by Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy[?]. This was adapted by Thornton Wilder in his non-musical play The Matchmaker, was produced on Broadway by David Merrick and then made into a 1958 film of the same name, directed by Joseph Anthony[?] and starring Shirley Booth, Anthony Perkins, Shirley MacLaine, Paul Ford[?], and Robert Morse[?]. The 1969 musical film was adapted by Ernest Lehman[?] and Michael Stewart[?] from their Broadway presentation, also produced by David Merrick, with book by Michael Stewart and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. The title song was sung by Louis Armstrong.
