Greene County, Alabama

Greene County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of General Nathaniel Greene of Georgia. As of 2000 the population was 9,974. Its county seat is Eutaw.

History Greene County was established on December 13, 1819.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,709 km² (660 mi²). 1,673 km² (646 mi²) of it is land and 36 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.13% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,974 people, 3,931 households, and 2,649 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (15/mi²). There are 5,117 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 19.09% White, 80.34% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,931 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.40% are married couples living together, 27.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.60% are non-families. 30.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the county the population is spread out with 29.20% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 88.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $19,819, and the median income for a family is $24,604. Males have a median income of $25,707 versus $19,051 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,686. 34.30% of the population and 29.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 44.10% are under the age of 18 and 31.60% are 65 or older.
