Eutaw, Alabama

Eutaw is a city located in Greene County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 1,878. The city is the county seat of Greene County.

Geography Eutaw is located at 32°50'26" North, 87°53'21" West (32.840680, -87.889037)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.8 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.22% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,878 people, 778 households, and 504 families residing in the city. The population density is 158.7/km² (411.1/mi²). There are 899 housing units at an average density of 76.0/km² (196.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 33.01% White, 66.03% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 778 households out of which 24.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.5% are married couples living together, 21.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 84.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,056, and the median income for a family is $32,946. Males have a median income of $30,284 versus $18,869 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,573. 28.9% of the population and 24.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 39.4% are under the age of 18 and 22.5% are 65 or older.
