Gaston Leroux was born in Paris, France. He's best known for writing The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l'opéra, 1910 which has been made into several film and stage productions (see Phantom of the Opera, for example).
Leroux worked as a journalist, sailing the world as a correspondent. In 1905 he was present at and covered the Russian Revolution. He began writing novels in the early 1900's, his first being Le Mystère de la chambre jaune (1907; The Mystery of the Yellow Room), starring an amateur detective Joseph Rouletabille. In 1910, he wrote The Phantom of the Opera.
He died in Nice.
